A person can be hypnotized anywhere, at any time, though there are varying physical and environmental conditions which are conducive towards hypnotism.

It isn't recommended that a person be hypnotized other than by a properly qualified practitioner, usually holding at least a degree in psychology plus post-graduate studies in hypnotism.

Such a person will always show their credentials in this field. If they are reluctant to do so, or evasive, stay away from them.

Is it possible to read a story and be hypnotized?

Yes - anyone who is deeply absorbed in reading a story IS hypnotized! At its most basic, being "hypnotized" is simply being in a mental state where your concentration is highly focused on something (eg reading, watching a movie, listening to music, undertaking a task requiring intense concentration etc) to the exclusion of all else. So, someone who is "lost in a book", or "daydreaming", or fascinated by someone/ something, is in a state of hypnosis. When about to fall asleep, you are hypnotized - you can not go to sleep without being in this state.
