From the U S Government - What Jobs Can Youth Do?

When You Are 13 Or Younger . . .

  • You can deliver newspapers.
  • You can work as a baby-sitter.
  • You can work as an actor or performer in motion pictures, television, theater or radio.
  • You can work in a business solely owned or operated by your parents.
  • You can work on a farm owned or operated by your parents.

However, parents are prohibited from employing their children in manufacturing, mining, or any other occupation declared hazardous by the Secretary of Labor.

Jobs for 13-Year-Olds

Child Labor Laws are very strict and nearly all companies adhere to a set of hiring rules to avoid crossing the line. Thus, a 13 year old may not have an opportunity to work for an employer in the typical sense of the word, in a regular job, or for that matter, even be considered in the first place.

But, there is hope. Many a young person who are enterprising and determined to earn money, say, for college or that new bicycle, can find paying jobs right within their own neighborhood. There are some cautions you need to be aware of, such as making sure your parents or guardians know who you're in contact with, where you will be, perhaps they may even choose to meet the person you do work for.

I have had neighbor youngsters come to my door and offer to clean leaves from my bushes in the spring, for a set fee. I have had neighbor children offer to cut my lawn, wash my car, rake the yard, and sweep out my garage.

Sometimes, the Ma & Pa store can give you a small job to do for a few dollars, cash. In my youth I took down and scrapped off tape from sale signs on windows in a grocery store. I changed out multiple listing sheets in frames hung in the window of a real estate firm for pocket change, I washed signs for that same Realtor - $.50 a sign. I even made money washing down wagons and bicycles for other kids.(My parents supplied the soap, rags and water).

I've heard of elderly people hiring youngsters to help them with home chores, writing letters, reading mail and straightening their pantries for easy reach of needed items. One youngster helped elderly folks prepare for a garage sale. There are youth camps in some communities where, youngsters can help the community in park and public grounds clean-up initiatives. If they don't have one in your community, perhaps you can convince the local municipality to start one this summer, offering each child participating a savings bond for education.

Traditional work, for youngsters (who are generally under age for corporate and manufacturing jobs), can be found with a little effort and forethought. Always include your parents or guardians in on your thinking, ideas and plans. Allow them to help you to think things through, set some guidelines and help you make the right judgments. And, most importantly be sure they are aware and approve of anyone you come in contact with in your quest for earning money for that special interest.

Here is more advice and input:

  • Ask your parents for advice but be creative maybe you can make charm bracelets and then sell them at the local Arts and Crafts fair. But make sure it's not illegal or can hurt you.
  • Most states by law requires a minor child to have a work permit. This can be obtained from the board of education. However, tell the minor child, if he or she is willing to consider babysitting, dog walking, or a paper route it is not necessary to have a work permit. But Dairy Queen or McDonald are always options.
  • Something that you can do is a volunteer project. In Utah there are tons of places to volunteer including the Children's Museum, The Homeless Shelters, the dog pound. All sorts of things can be done to help out your community. If you are looking for a paying job, that isn't going to happen for at least one year.
  • In the UK you need to be 18 to work at McDonald's. We have no Dairy Queen though the work permit thing is right. You can get jobs in local minor shops depending their policies but they/you would need to apply for a work permit.
  • A 13 year old can't work in a business unless its owned by parents or relatives because of insurance reasons. Also, the wage and labor board don't like it. In the summer there are jobs like cleaning houses, yard work, pet sitting, washing vehicles, window washing, etc.
  • You may be able to work at a grocery store.
  • I'm thirteen and I got my job through the hire-a-youth office in my community. I would suggest finding out it there's one near you.
  • Jobs for a 13 year old: paper route, mowing lawns, doing garage sales. If you're trying to get something expensive do the paper route, it can pay a lot. The bad thing is that you have to wake up around 3:30 or 4:00am in the morning.
  • Not really much. Doing odd jobs around the neighborhood, babysitting, working with parents, doing stuff for them. But you should really concentrate on finishing school so you don't have to change baby's diapers your whole life.
  • You can start your own company, but you can't get hired in most places till 15. You could also write a book. Start an odd jobs service or use any artist talents. Weekly housekeeper and any under the table paid jobs.
  • In most states, it is illegal to hire even part time for 13 year olds. Babysitting and a paper route are the first things that come time mind. Mowing lawns and doing odd jobs around the neighborhood are other good ways to earn money.
  • None that actually mean getting paychecks. It's against child labor laws. If he/she does work, it will have to be paid under the table.
  • I would suggest doing things around locally such as lawn service, washing cars, etc. Most states have a minimum age requirement of 16 before a minor can be hired. Sometimes your parents can help you get a "work permit" under certain circumstances. Check with your local employment office and they should be able to give you some additional information.
  • A thirteen year old can walk dogs, mow lawns, rake leaves, and some even babysit. I hope this helps you out.
  • Not much. The usual walking pets, baby sitting, mowing lawns or just doing chores to get an allowance.
  • Its really hard to find a job when you're 13. If you've got a local ballpark, try to see if you can get a job score keeping. That's what I do anyway.
  • Well, actually I got a job at Hungry Jacks and I'm only thirteen, so maybe all you guys and girls out there try, its so easy.
  • Live life to the fullest don't get a job now because if in the long run you want to do something in the summer time and you have to work it will be less likely to find a sub for you to go out of town.....or you can fish and sell the fish
  • It's a great idea to set a job list up with your parents. I know, it seems childish, but if you do stuff that they want done but know they'll never get around to, you should build up some cash. My jobs are; taking out the trash, cleaning the laundry room, cleaning the house bathrooms, wiping and vacuuming our cars, cleaning showers, organizing something weekly, and even putting in clean sheets weekly and maintaining a clean room. I get a dollar per job I do. If my parents are really ticked off at me, my mom will take money away. That hasn't happened yet, though. I get paid monthly. I can tell you that parents would also like you to maybe wash the dog, wash the car, mow the lawn, or CLEAN THE GARAGE!!! I can guarantee that they'll pay you some cash on that last one, especially if your parents dread the day that they have to.
  • Give it a try; get some money for movies, the mall, etc. It's worth it.
  • Try to get a news paper delivery job I've rang nearly every news paper round job there is going in Cardiff! they've taken my name down but not 1 have rung me back! So I doubt you should do it unless there advertising, it's very popular!
  • Hi, I'm a babysitter and if you want to be babysitter don't be because it's to hard but it makes a lot of money.
  • Try everywhere, as not many 13 year olds can get jobs
  • A thirteen year old can get a job at pizza place doing what some 13 year old hate doing, dishes but you are making money and that's what count.
  • If you want a job and your only 13 years old like me make some flyer's saying you'll cut their lawn for like 5.00$ and in the winter, shovel their driveway for 3-10$ depending on the size. DON'T GET A PAPER ROUTE IT'S NOT WORTH IT YOU ONLY GET LIKE 200 A MONTH AND YOU HAVE TO GET UP AT 5 IN THE MORNING AND NO 13 YEAR OLD WANTS THAT
  • Hey, I am 13 Years Old right now and this past summer from April until October I was working for a carnival that traveled around Connecticut and New York. It's good money, and a lot of fun, plus you get free food, but it is hard work, and it takes dedication. I was at a carnival and they asked me how old I was. I said I was 13, so they asked me if I wanted to work for the night because they were low on staff. I asked my parents, Of course, extra money, and good experience - they didn't mind. I worked in a balloon dart game for $8.00 and hour. They fired a couple of people, so I was put right in the spot. I worked for about 4-5 months and made over $1,000 dollars. And this is only working on the weekends. Don't forget, that that amount does not include all of the tear-down money that I also got, which is taking down the rides and then setting them up in the next location. Good money, good experience, fun time, but a lot of hard work, and some serious luck. Oh yeah- and if your a boy, you get to make some pretty hot chicks.
  • You can find a job too I'm 13 and found a job at Subway so you can too, good luck finding a job.
  • You can find a job, I found one at all you can eat. I get paid $6.00 an hour.
  • If you are a hard worker and like to work, you can be like me. I'm 13 and have 5 jobs 3000$ a month. I find it easy because I like working. You might say I have no free time, but somehow I do and a lot of it specially on weekends and every Tuesday, I don't work at all
  • Hi I'm 13 and my dad owns a pizza company. My dad said I could work for him, taking people's order and stuff. Also, if your looking for a job you can babysit put up flyer's and tell family and friends about.
  • In Most States I Think You Can Be 13 And Get A Job. First You Must Get Good Grades, Then You Must Visit Your Schools Office And Get The Paperwork For a Work Permit. Once You Have a Work Permit You Can Pretty Much Get a Job Anywhere. They Will Hire You Of Course within Age Standards (I.E. Not a Bar, Adult Store Etc.)
  • Well, of course! Mowing neighbors yards, helping out fellow neighborhoods. The only way you could get a -real- job is if they pay you under the table. And it'd be very hard to find something like that.
  • Do you mean full-time, 40 hours, with benefits? No. Do you mean part-time while you continue school? Sure. Baby-sitting, newspaper routes, lawn-mowing for the neighborhood, craft shows, buying and selling at garage sales and on eBay, repairing things if you're handy, selling baked goods. I'm sure you can think of more.
  • No, the U.S. Department of Labor prohibits children under 14 from working outside of the home. Many states are even more restrictive. The state limit is often 16.
  • There are jobs like yard work, babysitting, animal sitting, etc., and if your parents own a business, or relatives, you could work for them. Some farms hire teenagers to do some work but it is limited hours. Good luck.
  • 12 and up: (1) sale and delivery of periodicals (2) door-to-door selling and delivery of merchandise (3) baby sitting (4) gardening and other non hazardous working on property (5) non hazardous agricultural work (6) occupations similar to the ones listed above [TAKEN DIRECTLY FROM THE RULEBOOK]
  • The legal working age in U S is 14, but you could babysit or rake leaves, because you have no taxes on them.
  • McDonald's - 14, Taco Bell- 14, Safeway - 14, Blockbuster - 18, Starbucks - 16.
  • No. Employers must wait until you are 14 to hire you legally. You can do odd jobs like mowing laws and babysitting.
  • 13 year old can only get non-government recognized jobs such as babysitting and house cleaning and mowing lawns in any state.
  • You've probably heard this from everyone, but you can always babysit or mow lawns. Make sure you put a lot of effort into whatever you do so that the people will want to hire you again.
  • I just go door 2 door knocking with business cards round my house.
  • There are few places that allow 13 year old to work. However, some small convenient or grocery stores(like Winn Dixie) hire 13-14 year old to be Cart helpers or bag boys.
  • When I was a kid living in Houston, TX there was a program called the (HJTPP), Houston Job Training Partnership Program in which a child at ages 13-17 could work a full time job; 40hrs. a week and paid minimum wage. There should be programs as such in all states; if not look up JOB Corps.
  • Depending on where you live you might be able to get a job pumping gas or working in a fast food restaurant
  • Some churches need altar servers - at mine masses are on a volunteer basis (you can get volunteer hours), but they pay $10 for weddings and funerals. Even more sometimes.
  • A 13 year older can clean and help other people and get payed for You can help people with what they need to do and have extra for yourself
  • Labor laws prevent anyone under the age of 13 years old to have a sufficient job.
  • look I'm 13 and live in Canada and some places will hire but it takes a while to fin something. I've been trying really hard and its not like I just want spending money i have things that I need to buy every month.. like Birth Control ! that doesn't come cheap when you have acne like me.
  • Probably nobody will, mainly because you're under the age of 14 (legal working age). This isn't to say a local farm/greenhouse won't hire you. They usually take all the help they can get.
