There are many synagogues and temples where Jews can worship. Back in the days of The Bible, there was only one central temple, and people went there, as if on a pilgrimage. But these days, there is no one main temple. All over the world, wherever there are Jewish residents of a country, there are Jewish houses of worship. In the United States, there have been synagogues or temples almost since the earliest days of the country.

The first state to offer religious freedom to Jews was Rhode Island, and the first synagogue there is still standing (President George Washington even paid it a visit). If a city or a state has a large number of Jewish residents, there will be more than one synagogue; some cities may have as many as 20-30 of them, others may have only one or two. Also, some synagogues and temples are more modern in their style of worship (men and women pray together, rabbis can be either men or women), while others are more traditional (men and women pray separately, women cannot be rabbis). Some Jewish people refer to their temple as a "shul" (rhymes with wool), a Yiddish word that also means "school," since one goes to the synagogue not only to pray but to learn.

It is worth noting that Jews do not worship "temples", they worship God at temples.

Jews, like members of other faiths, can worship anywhere at all, but the Jewish house of worship - which usually also provides teaching - is the synagogue.
