I strongly suspect that he is only making a threat in an effort to get you to pay him some money. If you used the vehicle with his permission (and presumably your mother's as well) I SERIOUSLY doubt that any court would find you liable for his so-called "loss." To set your mind at ease, if you'd like to check with an attorney - in some areas your local Bar Association holds periodic "clinics" where people can ask questions for free regarding legal matters, or an attorney may charge you just a few bucks for a one-time consultation. BTW: If my guess is correct there is a word for this underhanded tactic, and it is 'EXTORTION,' which is a criminal offense.
