You must pull over to the right if it is coming in back of you. That way it can pass easily. If it is coming towards you, slow down and you may have to pull over to allow it to pass from that direction as well. The whole idea is to allow it to get where it is going as fast as it can.

In the USA, slow down and move to the right side of the road as soon as it is safe to do so. On a 2-lane road, move to the shoulder. Allow the emergency vehicle to proceed.

Either move over one lane, or else reduce your speed by 20 MPH (below the posted speed limit) before passing.
