The images in Google Maps (and Google Earth) are updated on acontinuous basis. The update cycle is typically twice a month, butonly a handful of areas are updated at a given t…ime. Updates aremade when new imagery is available from a variety of sources. It's hard to say exactly when an area will be updated because someareas may be updated more frequently than others (just because thatdata is more readily available). While most images are no more than3 years old in high resolution areas, low resolution imagery insome areas may be older. Due to overwhelming demand when a given area will be updated Googlehas created a new e-mail notification service. Check out' Follow Your World ' in related links below.
Google Maps uses the same satellite data as Google Earth andupdated together usually once or twice a month. ------------------------------------------------------------------…--------------------------------------Google Both Google Earth and Google Maps are updated with bulk updatesusually once or twice every month but NOT every area is updated oneach update.
Google Maps provides satellite and map views in addition to Street Views. The satellite view of Google Maps uses the same backend satellite imagery database used by Google Ear…th. The satellite imagery are typically from the GeoEye or DigitalGlobe owned satellites, and some of the imagery are actually aerial photos from aircraft using special high resolution cameras.
In 2006 Google Maps was updated to use the same satellite image database as Google Earth. Before that Google had to update and process imagery for both Google Earth and Google… Maps where the maps where often out of sync with each other. Now Google updates its central map & imagery database and the updates are made available to both Google Earth and Google Maps at once. The time between getting imagery from satellite and seeing it on Google Maps is far from real-time. Once the imagery is taken by satellite, it takes time to process the data by a commercial provider like GeoEye before it is available to Google and other customers. Google will do additional processing to convert imagery into the format and coordinate system of its internal databases. This is one reason you normally won't find any imagery younger than about 6 months. For these reasons, the Google map & imagery database is updated once or twice a month.
Google Earth is a 3D earth viewer (run as desktop or mobile application) and Google Maps is a web-based 2-D map viewer with street and satellite views. For desktop platforms…, Google Earth is a standalone application that first must be installed while Google Maps is run from a web browser. Client apps exist for both on some mobile platforms so that the distinction between the two gets blurred. Both Google Earth and Google Maps share the same Google global imagery database with satellite and aerial imagery including Street View photographs.

So when will Google Earth/Maps update the imagery in my area? You've checked Google Earth and imagery in a given area is older than 3 years. If you have the 'Status Bar' ch…ecked in view menu then the imagery date is shown in lower left of the map. Sometimes Google Earth has newer imagery for a given area available in ' Historical Imagery ' mode, which can be enabled in the View menu. Newer imagery may have more clouds, etc. and slightly older imagery is considered "better" by Google and used by default. So you've checked and an area is older than 3 years and no newer imagery is available in historical imagery. Now you can report it via the data reporting form (listed in related links). Individual requests get tabulated among millions of others so don't get disappointed if you don't get a response from Google nor see an update immediately. In the meanwhile you should sign up for e-mail notification for updates in your areas of interest via the new ' Follow Your World ' service (see related link below).
