To make phones easier to use.
The touch screen is the result of many years of development. Several decades ago, engineers were looking for a way of using graphics as part of a control panel. By overlaying images on touch sensitive papers and foils, pressing a certain part of the image would change the resistivity of the paper or foil. This could be translated into X and Y co-ordinates. The components were fairly crude at the time and the touch sensitive sheets were opaque. They were fine for use under printed images but of no use for computer or television images. Current applications for opaque touch sensitive surfaces is the graphics tablet, a graphic designer's equivalent to a mouse. The technology was developed to allow pressure sensitive transparent foils which were overlaid on computer screens. Early versions reduced the clarity of the screen and they were expensive. These types were available in the 1980s and several models based on IBM display screens were produced. Since that time, touch sensitive foils have become more transparent and much less expensive. It would be wrong to call the touch screen a single invention. Many small inventions and ideas have brought touch screen technology to its present state. The "invention" should be credited to the thousands of companies, scientists and engineers who have all played their own small part in the process.
Touch screens have been used for many years in various applications. The first use of touch screens in cameras was seen as soon as touch screens were made sufficiently small to fit them to compact still and video cameras. They were seen in mass produced models from 2001 onwards and have become very common ever since.
Touch screen are made using piezoelectric or capacitive effect principle.that is, if you touch it(screen) than the transducer inside touch screen which may be piezoelectric or capacitive changes the voltage /capacitance respectively and this variation sent to micro controller for operation.
An iraqian guy called ahmed mohammed al nuami who first got the idea but it was another person who invented it. this is why they say Iraqi people are smart
I have a at&t touch screen android phone from somebody and I've never seen no life to it I have plugged it in but still nothing what could be wrong?

TECHNICALLY SPEAKING - there is NO such thing as an iTouch, there is however the iPod Touch.. It was made to be the same as the iPhone, without the phone. The iPod Touch also lacks a microphone, which the iPhone has. The iPod Touch can play music, games, but is only compatible with iTunes songs. It has a touch screen, hence the name of the ipod, which allows you to do all of the functions, and when you turn it, like on the internet, the screen adjusts for turning around and displays it in a wide screen format. It is probably the best iPod created so far, as it can do more than just play music.
I don''t think anything happens to it if you don't press it to hard otherwise it might break.
