The Quick Answer: There were no Popes before Christ, because The Office of Peter (the Papacy) was established by Christ while He was still alive.

The Real Question: Who was the first Pope?

The Answer: Peter, the Apostle of Jesus! Check out Matthew 16: 13-20, Cor. 3:11, Eph. 2:20, 1 Pet. 2:5-6, Rev. 21:14.

Improvement:

From November 1268 to September 1, 1271, there was no pope as the conclave, considered the first conclave, was unable to elect a new pontiff. Therefore, the Church went nearly three years without a pope. During this period three of the twenty cardinal-electors died and one resigned. Pope Gregory X was eventually elected pope after impatient followers of the election reduced the rations to the cardinals to bread and water and removed the roof of the chapel where they were meeting, exposing the electors to the winter weather.
