Google doesn't take satellite pictures. Google purchases satellite imagery from a variety of providers such as DigitalGlobe and GeoEye. Much of Google's imagery actually comes from aerial Photography mostly in airplanes with special high resolution cameras. Google make bulk updates to Google Earth and Google Maps imagery usually every 60 days but not all areas are updated on each update.

∙ 13y agoDates for satellite imagery depend on what area you're looking at. Dates varies greatly from 6 months to five years old.
The imagery date for a given image on Google Earth is shown in lower-left of status bar. Status Bar can turned on/off in the View menu. See details in article listed in related links.

∙ 12y agoThe images in Google Earth (and Google Maps) are updated on a continuous basis typically every 2-3 weeks.
Street View imagery has its own update schedule and bulk updates are made on a less regular basis.
But note that both the aerial and satellite map imagery and street view imagery are updated for given regions and not globally so one area may be rather recent (usually not newer than 6 months) while another is 3 years old.
