On April 22, 1944, the China-Burma-India Theater of World War II (CBI) was the scene of the first ever use of a helicopter in a combat zone. The United States had deployed the Sikorsky R-4 variants to the theater to assist with the recovery of downed airmen.

The first use of helicopters were for medical evacuation. The Bell 47 fulfilled this role in the Korean War. I'll see if I can find the first use of an Army helicopter.

Helicopter combat testing was carried out in Germany before Sikorsky even left the ground in the USA.The Flettner 265 and Fl 282 helicopters flew off ship convoys in the baltic and mediteranean. The craft were also tested for dropping small depth charges and submarine marking flares. They were also tested for airsea rescue, medivac and could tow liferafts etc on cables.The much larger German Fa 223 was used during ww2 for rescue and recovery of crashed aircraft and was able to rescue downed pilots behind enemy lines and airlift the crashed aircraft themselves. The Fa 223 had a nose mounted Mg 15 machine gun and could carry substantial bomb and depth charge loads.The Fa 223 was used to airlift complete aircraft and light trucks y suspending them below on cables.German choppers were used for artillery spotting and flew recon in the defence of Berlin.they were tested in airlifting artillery , troops, ammunition and supplies for mountain warfare at mittenwald near Innsbruck.
