The Hornet first flew in the 1970's, and Canada decided to use them in 1980 under the designation CF-18.

The F-18 Hornet (of which the CF-18 is a slight modification) is a development from the YF-17 prototype, the loser in the US Air Force's Lightweight Fighter contest. (It lost to the YF-16, which became the F-16.) The original design was done in 1971-3.
