for a gasoline engine, you'd generally want to shift no later than 2000-2500 RPM for the best efficiency, sometimes can shift lower depending on the vehicle. If you shift too early there'll be no power at all and the vehicle will shudder due to the engine rotating too slowly.

for a diesel engine you'd want to shift earlier because diesel's operate at lower RPM's than gasoline engines.

For most driving you also dont want to MASH the gas pedal hard (unless its something like maybe a geo metro then you'd need to push the pedal a bit farther)

(i am assuming a 5 speed manual transmission instead of something with more spaced out gears like a 'granny low' transmission in a 1980 truck with a low, first, second and third gear) but even in my '80 chevy i still shifted most of the time before 2500 RPM (from 1-2 and 2-3). I also had an 88ish Honda CRX Si that i could usually shift at about 1800 RPM. but most vehicles 2000-2500rpm is a good spot to aim for and above 55mph you should be in the highest gear.
