MA House votees in favor of Sales Tax Holiday
By a 134-13 vote, the House authorized a Sales Tax Holiday for August 14-15. Special thanks to Speaker Robert DeLeo for his support for this consumer stimulus (see article below), as well as to amendment sponsors Minority Leader Brad Jones of Reading and Chairman John Binienda of Worcester.
There are no clear indications yet of the Senate leadership and Governor's positions on this issue. It will therefore be important to continue grassroots efforts to seek the support of rank and file Senators and that of the Governor.
Governor Deval Patrick signed the 2010 Massachusetts tax-free holiday bill this week (August 7). His signature comes less than a week after the Massachusetts House and Senate passed a bill to bring back tax-free shopping weekend in August 2010. During the weekend of Aug. 14 and 15, most items worth $2,500 or less will be exempt from the state's 6.25 percent sales tax.
