Lent ends on Maundy Thursday, which begins the short season of Easter Triduum (Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday and Easter Sunday). However, fasting for Lent often continues through to Holy Saturday, concluding after Easter Vigil services.

Depends what religion you belong to. Many religions subscribe to a period of fasting, these occur at different times of the year; for example in the Christian faith has set dates for fasting where as in Islam fasting takes place during the month of Ramadan which depends on the Islamic lunar calendar.

Is fasting a waste of time?

A time of fasting is to remember what Christ did for us in the desert for 40 days and 40 nights, he made a sacrafice and resisted tempatation for us. If you are a religious person and want to please your Lord then fasting is far from a waste of time. But if you don't want to give up food by fasting, perhaps there is something else you usually do that you don't mind giving up for Lent.
