Worming a mother of puppies is like normal but to take extra care when you worm the puppies at afew weeks/months old it's always good to worm the mother at the same time AND before the puppies are born so they don't get worms from drinking off her and she doesn't get worms from cleaning up after them.

A bitch that you plan on breeding should be dewormed before being bred. Roundworms can go into a cyst stage in the muscle tissue (where they cannot be touched by any dewormers) and when the female dog comes into heat, the cysts become active, just waiting to invade those precious puppies that are formed inutero.

I always deworm my pups at 4 weeks of age along with their dam at the same time, using Nemex-2 or another generic version. They should then be dewormed again at 6 weeks (Mom too) & just to make sure, at 8 weeks (just the pups). I would also take in a stool sample to your Vet to have it checked to make sure the pups are free of all internal parasites. Roundworms are very common in pups due what I wrote above about the Dam.

ideally you should worm your puppy 4-6 weeks after birth. Your puppy should ideally be wormed every 3 months thereafter however depending on breed etc some dogs may require worming earlier. Typical signs that your dog/puppy may need to be wormed are:- Irritation around their bottom, dragging their bottom along pavements, carpets etc. Loose and irregular stools and in severe cases worm like maggots in their stools. You can buy worming tablets in your local supermarket however the most effective treatments are available from your vet. I personally would recommend Johnson's dog and puppy worming treatment, this is widely available in most pet shops/vetinary surgeons or online and are roughly sold in packs of 10 - 15 tablets.
