You can't apply until 30 days after your 62nd, 66th or 70th birthdays if you wait until those ages to retire. Or you can apply anytime in between those birthdates if you choose. For example you could file for retirement in August of your 63rd year if you decided to retire then. WRONG You can apply within 4 months of when you are eligible for your first payment. in the U.S. social security cards are needed while the child is still an infant. why i don't know, maybe it has something to do with the book of revelation where it says every one who wants to buy or sell or anything where a transaction takes place will only be permitted if you have the number of the beast. if you have a work visa your green card will suffice until you become a naturalized immigrant then you get a ss#

You can start receiving retirement benefits at age 62. However, you will get substantially more if you wait until you are older to get your first check. The amount you will receive at different ages depends on when you were born, as well as how much you paid in through the years.

Currently, the social security retirement age is 65. However, you can get the funds out earlier if you were willing to receive less in the way of a benefit.

You can check out some great calculators on the Related Link below that will show you the impact of taking the distribution early.

What you need to qualify for social security retirement benefits depends on what year you were born. When you work and pay social security taxes you earn "credits" and you must accrue a certain number of credits to qualify for any benefits. Once you earn the correct number of credits, you must wait until you are 66-67 (depending on the year you were born) to earn full benefits.

You can apply for Social Security benefits as early as 62 years of age. This is if you are applying for retirement benefits. Remember, earlier retirement will equal less money. For Social Security Disability, you can apply at any age, or if your under 18 a parent can apply for you, as long as you have worked a specific amount of time (depending on state). If you have never worked, you can apply for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) at any age. You should receive a Social Security outline every year about one month before your birthday, via postal mail. Check it to see how many ‘work points' you have acquired and how much you would receive if you applied for any type of Social Security now. You may also want to go to www.socialsecurity.gov for further details.

You must be at least 61 years and nine months old to apply for social security benefits.
