Daffodil bulbs should be planted in the fall months before the ground freezes. Why autumn when it's a spring flower?

  • The bulb must be exposed to cold temperatures for the formation of the flower bud.
  • The bulb roots should be established prior to freezing temperatures.
  • To break dormancy & bloom, must spring bulbs need 12-14 weeks of temps below 45F.
However, they can be planted in February for a slightly later bloom than you would normally get from that particular variety.
  • Plant time zone 1-4: late August and September
  • Plant time zone 4-7: September through December

Daffodils can be dug up in late May, or after the foliage has died back. Wash the bulbs and let them dry. Store in an onion sack in a cool, ventilated place and re- plant in autumn. If you wish to move them in 'green leaf', carefully dig up bulbs taking as much soil as possible (dont clean off the soil) and re-plant straight away at the same depth

As soon as the ground thaws from the winter's cold temperatures, the daffodil bulb awakens to begin the new year. When exactly this is depends on the location and weather for any particular year. The daffodil has long been referred to as the herald of spring, and that it does. When you're sick and tired of winter, and the sun starts to warm the soil, you get those happy, daffy flowers promising a wonderful new year.

Planting daffodils:

  • Daffodils must be planted in a locale where it will get a period of cold. Cold is necessary for bud formation.
  • The location should be well drained and full sun, though a daffodil can tolerate partial shade.
  • It is always preferable to have a highly organic soil, but daffodils will accept almost any soil you give them. Sandy soil makes them grow taller, apparently.
  • They don't like standing water or full shade, and do not survive long under evergreen trees and shrubs.

Daffodils need the chill of winter soil to bloom in the spring. They are planted in the fall anytime before the soil freezes. They should, however, be in the soil by mid-December.

How deep do you plant your bulbs?

When planting a daffodil bulb, you have to find a site with full sun or part shade with somewhat fertile and well-drained soil. Plant the bulbs in the fall about 3-6 inches apart. Bear in mind that they will soon be crowding each other. Generally planting is done in the fall, but late winter is OK, too, as long as the ground is not frozen. The bulbs need to be 2 times as deep as the bulb is high. A 2-inch long bulb should be planted 4-inches deep. If the winters are severe, 3-inches of soil above the bulb tip is recommended. In clay soils, don't plant as deeply as in sandy soil. If planted too deeply, the bulb will produce long stems and few flowers.

Why would daffodils not flower?

There are a few reasons a daffodil might not bloom. The clump has not been divided in a while, and there is not enough space/nutrients for a full bloom. The clump was divided when the flowers were blooming, so that the bulbs did not store enough energy for the next year's blooms. These plants grew from seed and are not yet old enough to bloom (it takes 5-7 years for a daffodil grown from seed to produce a flower). The plant is too shaded. To bloom the plant needs to be in full sun or partial shade.
