Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe that you capitalize the term democracy when referring to a specific government, such as the American Democracy, and not when simply using the term. When you associate it with a specific government it becomes a proper noun. The contradiction that I see to this lies within the usage of the term communism. The term Communism is used to refer to the form of government such as the one associated with The Soviet Union, while communism is used to describe the political philosophy developed from Marxist theory. It is my understanding that this is unrelated and specifc to the term communism(not a general rule)....... I am a student still so I could be wrong, and If I am I will have leaned something.
