There are a number of reasons for flooding.

  • ice and snow melt
  • rainstorms
  • hurricanes
Ice and snow melt--happens during the Spring. This is when all the winter snow, and ice begins to melt, changing to water. Then flowing downhill to streams, then to rivers, and with all the added water, causes rivers to overflow, and causing flooding.

Rainstorms--can really happen at any time during the year. Some rainstorms can "dump" bunches of water, causing flooding.

Hurricanes--Hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November. What happens there is that hurricanes have a "storm serge" which is caused by winds "pushing" the ocean water up ahead of the storm. There is also torrential rain and blasting winds associated with Hurricanes.
