Italians have been coming to Australia since before WW2 but started to arrive here in large numbers after WW2 as a result of the refugee situation there and the need in Australia for migrants to work on the new infrastructure and industrial project that were developing.

To answer the question, the first Italians arrived in the Cairns district in 1891. 45 Italian workers arrived in Townsville, north Queensland and walked to Cairns in search of work. Many of them were taken on by agricultural scientists Dr Thomatis, who leased 1000 acres in the Freshwater-Barron area, now called Caravonica.

The earliest inhabitants of Australia are thought to have traveled there by means of land bridges between 42,000 and 48,000 years ago. On January 26, 1788 the first permanent settlement, a penal colony called Crown Colony was established. From that point forward, Australia served as largely an a place to send criminals to do manual labor for the British Empire. In 1831, the first "free colony" (that is, one open to free citizens) was founded, being called South Australia. This marked the beginning of true Immigration to the area, as the people going there were doing so to being a new life, rather than serve as forced manual labor as punishment for crimes.
