The first 13 states effectively became states with the proclamation of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, and all 13 with the ratification (by nine states) of the US Constitution in 1788 (New Hampshire, June 21, 1788). The other states were admitted as separated parts of existing states or as new territories. Vermont and Texas were independent republics.
