Serfdom ended at different times in different places. Also, it was pretty much long gone by the time it was formally and legally ended in many places. And in some places, such as Norway, Finland, and Sweden, it never really existed at all.
In England and France, it was on the decline by the time the Black Death hit, and was dealt a blow by the plague. It became obsolete in England during the 14th century, but was only formally ended there by Queen Elizabeth I. It continued to exist in some parts of France, however, until the French Revolution. It was rare in Scotland after the 14th century, but was not abolished there until 1799. As it was being abandoned in western Europe, it spread through eastern Europe, and it was not abolished in Germany until 1832. The Austro-Hungarian Empire gave it up in 1848, and the Russian Empire in 1861. After that, there were still a few holdout areas, and it was not given up in Bosnia and Herzegovina until 1918.
