The early remote controls for television went into production in the late 1970s and early 1980s. They tended to be very simple devices capable of changing channels and not much more. The more advanced controls could also adjut volume and turn the television off. Not many were capable of turning the television on again because the power to drive the remote control receiver was also turned off with the rest of the television.

At that time, the majority of remote controls used ultra-sonic signals - sound at around 38KHz. It was a relatively slow and unreliable communication medium and infra-red based remotes were introduced fairly quickly. Over the last thirty years or so, infra-red has replaced ultra-sonic completely and functionality has increased steadily. Modern televisions often use the remote as the only method to tune and set up the television. The hundred or more functions seen on a modern remote is a far cry from the three or four function remotes of the 70s and 80s.

*** Sorry, but I knew someone who had a 1973 Panasonic 26" console TV with an IR (infra-red) remote.

It was wireless and activated/turned the mechanical tuner/dial.

The dial turned and snapped into each channel position (2-13) with a decided click.

That was at the early part of the Japanese/Asian product invasion into the American market, back when we still had factories with American workers and built everything we needed here in our own country. That was before the free-trade globalists sold out America with nafta gatt and the wto and sent all manufacturing overseas.

Remote controlled TVs have been around since the late 1970s, although not common. Remotes began to become common place in the 1980s, and by the mid to late 80s, almost all TVs came with a remote.

The first remote intended to control a television was developed by Zenith Radio Corporation in 1950. The remote, called "Lazy Bones", was connected to the television by a wire. A wireless remote control, the "Flashmatic", was developed in 1955 by Eugene Polley. It worked by shining a beam of light onto a photoelectric cell, but the cell did not distinguish between light from the remote and light from other sources. The Flashmatic also had to be pointed very precisely at the receiver in order to work.

The TV remote was invented back in 1950.It was known as a remote from zenith that's called "Lazy Bones".It was then a wireless remote. It probably was a remote for set-top boxes. Then in 1962 probably, the first corded remote for tv was invented. Then in 1972,the first ir remote for tv was invented. In 2000 i guess, the first bluetooth remote for tvs were invented.TVs started coming with a remote in 1980.Before then, you needed a remote for it to control the tv since there was no settings setup by the remote with the manual buttons since the first tv remote started with 2 or 4 buttons.TV remotes before 1980 were probably set-top box remotes. There were many buttons like the contrast buttons, brightness buttons, color buttons, sharpness buttons, power button, mute button.TV remotes started having that all in an easy way to control the TV in 1980.When tvs started coming with a remote in 1980,the only ways the remote was included was wireless or corded. Before tvs started coming with a remote, people thought the only way to control the tv was by a push button cable box or push button satellite box. The first universal remote was on may 1st 1985 and started becoming standard and popular in the early '90s.It's true and i believe i did the research right since I did it on Wikipedia and the website that is called history

People also had to get a remote seperately or use a set-top box to control the tv since tvs didn't come with a remote but you had to get it seperately
