The first settlement on Van Diemen's Land, the original name for Tasmania, occurred in 1803. However, the colony was still administered by New South Wales until 1825, when it was separated administratively, and Hobart declared the capital. The name was changed to Tasmania in 1856.

All of Australia's colonies federated at the same time - on 1 January 1901. Tasmania was no different. On that date, the Commonwealth of Australia came into being with the same six states as it has now. Only the two mainland territories (which were not colonies) were formed later, in 1911.

Tasmania was established as a colony in its own right in 1803, but continued to be administered by the Governor of New South Wales. In June 1825, Van Diemen's Land was separated administratively from New South Wales, and Hobart Town was declared the capital of the colony.

Tasmania was one of Australia's founding states in 1901.

Did South West Australia vote 'for' or 'against' Federation?

Southwestern Australia was the one region in Australia that was against Federation. There were fears that, being so far away, the residents would be largely left out of major issues affecting the rest of Australia, so they did not feel they stood to gain much from Federation. When it looked like Western Australia was going to refuse to join the Federation, the goldfields area considered separating from the rest of the colony and joining the eastern states. Western Australia held back from agreeing to join the federation as Premier and former explorer John Forrest wanted to ensure the economic security of the state, given its distance from the more highly populated eastern states. Western Australia itself was divided over the decision to join, as the people of Albany pushed to be included as part of South Australia, rather than aligning themselves with Perth and Fremantle. Despite this, Forrest's 31 July 1900 referendum on whether the Western Australians wished to join the rest of the commonwealth was resoundly accepted throughout the state. Even in Albany, 914 voted "yes" and 67 voted "no".

What was Australia's new name after federation?

The Commonwealth of Australia is the official name. Commonly simply called Australia. Before federation there were six separate colonies with their own names (New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania.) Australia was a common, but unofficial name for the colonies together.

What are Australia's colonies?

There are no longer colonies of Australia. Prior to federation of the colonies in 1901, the colonies of Australia were New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania. These are now known as states.

Why didn't the Australian Capital Territory join the federation?

It didn't exist. At Federation, there were just six colonies in Australia: New South Wales, Tasmania, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia. The NSW government ceded land for the new Australian Capital Territory to the Commonwealth Government, and the Australian Capital Territory was founded on 1 January 1911. However, until 1938, it was called the Federal Capital Territory.
