Margaret Thatcher became Britain's first female Prime Minister on 4 May 1979. The Conservative party led by Margaret Thatcher won a parliamentary majority in the 1979 general election, and this was followed in 1983 by a landslide Conservative victory and re-election in 1987. Thatcher retained power for eleven years, resigning in November 1990.
Margaret Thatcher (Conservative) was Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1979 to 1990, making her the holder of that office in 1982.
It was probably Sirimavo Bandaranaike of Sri Lanka (previously known as Ceylon). She was the widow of Solomon Bandaranaike, a former prime minister, who was assassinated in 1959. She was elected in 1960, the first time any country had a woman prime minister.
