Best Answer

There were early cases that looked like AIDS in 1959 (UK and US) and 1969 (US). There is some doubt now about these.

In 1976 a sailor in Norway was diagnosed with AIDS, which he probably contracted in Cameroon, in Africa between 1960 and 1966.

In 1977 a Danish surgeon who had worked in Zaire was diagnosed.

There were several cases in 1978.

By the early 1980s there were many cases in the US.

The best accepted theory about the origin of HIV is that it is a descendant of a closely related virus, simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV), which infects monkeys. Researchers have known for a long time that certain viruses can pass from animals to humans, a process that is called zoonosis. HIV may have crossed over from chimpanzees as a result of a human killing a chimp and eating it for food.

Once a person with HIV progresses to have AIDS (in 8-10 years on the average), his immune system is so weak that many common infections begin to attack him.
