Most newborn mammals need to consume it's mothers colostrum milk in the first 12-24 hours in order for the gut to be able to absorb the antibodies. If you mean food other than milk, the normal age to start them on thin cereal is about a month. However, remember that not all babies are 'normal'. My granddaughter refused everything except formula until she was nearly a year old. Then, her first food was a mushroom off a Papa John's Pizza, quickly followed by the rest of the slice.
