A:Jesus told the parable of the good Samaritan in Luke 10:29-37. Jesus had appointed seventy disciples to preach his word in every city and place, and they had just returned and reported their success to him.

It is important that this parable occurs only in Luke's Gospel, as scholars have demonstrated that the author of this gospel learnt ever thing he knew about the mission and sayings of Jesus from Mark's Gospel and the hypothetical 'Q' document. As the story of the Good Samaritan is not to be found in those source documents, it is more likely that the author of Luke was the originator of the story he attributed to Jesus. This was written in the nineties of the first century or quite early in the second century.

Anther answer from our community:

The story of the good Samaritan is in Luke's Gospel. Scholars say they now know that the author of Luke's Gospel copied everything he knew about the mission and the teachings of Jesus from Mark's Gospel and the Q document, but this story is unique to Luke. There is no other known source that Luke's author used as a source for material about Jesus, so we can reasonably say that Luke's author wrote this story.

A:Asking when the story of the Good Samaritan started, suggests we should go beyond the straight-forward gospel account and attempt to establish whether Jesus really told this parable and, if not, when it was written. We do know that it appears only in Luke chapter 10.

We now know that the Gospels of Matthew and Luke were written anonymously and were based on the Gospel of Mark, with another source common to both of them, now known as the 'Q' document. The need for the two authors, given to be Matthew and Luke later in the second century, to rely on Mark and Q means that they knew nothing about Jesus other than what the found in those two sources. This is emphasised by the 'Missing Block', 74.5 verses from Mark 6:47 to Mark 8:27a which were was omitted from Luke, and which would have corresponded to around 13 pages missing from the copy of Mark that Luke's author relied on. It resulted in the curious conjunction found in Luke 9:18 "And it came to pass as he was alone praying, his disciples were with him: and he asked them ...", clauses which are more meaningful when found in Mark at the start and end of the Missing Block. Because of the Missing Block, Luke's Gospel omits the important miracle of walking on water, for which the author had no other source of information.

Having established that the story of the Good Samaritan does not come from either of Luke's known sources, it is probable that the story originated with the author of this gospel and was therefore not told by Jesus around 30 CE. As was common practice in ancient times, Luke reported what the author believed Jesus would have said. The story is consistent with the theology of Luke's Gospel but not consistent with the theology of Mark. If we can date Luke's Gospel, we then know when the story was written. There is definite evidence that the follow-up book, Acts of the Apostles, contains material published by Josephus in his Antiquities of the Jews in 93 CE, as well as indications that Luke's Gospel probably also contains material from the same source. It is therefore unlikely that Luke was written before the late 90s of the first century, or quite early in the second century. This is when the story of the Good Samaritan started.

The story of the Good Samaritan is to be found in Luke's Gospel. As this gospel, like all the New Testament gospels, was originally anonymous, we do not know who really wrote Luke but simply continue to use this name for convenience.

Some scholars have dated Jesus' ministry beginning in 27 AD and ending in 31 AD. The Good Samaritan parable was during these dates.

When was a man who had fallen among thieves written?

You'd have to be more specific regarding the information you seek, but the phrase comes from the parable of the Good Samaritan in the Bible (Gospel according to Luke). So it was either written ~2000 years ago (Jesus' words) or around the year 1611 (King James translation).

Can a black man be a samaritans?

The Samaritans are a living community, although a very small one. There are under 1000 Samaritans alive today, and they are not thrilled to be thought of only in a symbolic sense because of a 2000-year-old parable that involved one fictional member of their group. However, if someone wanted to translate Jesus' parable of the Good Samaritan into modern terms in the United States today, we might replace the priest in the original with a well-known pastor, someone who was very publicly in the service of God, and the Levite with a deacon in the church, someone who devoted considerable public effort to the Church. The Samaritan of the tale would quite appropriately be replaced with an 18-year-old Black teenager, someone who the majority assumes to be indifferent to the needs of the stricken traveler on the roadside and would not expect to offer any help.
