The camera obscura was discovered by Aristotle. He had a tiny hole in his tent, and he noticed that the light coming through the hole would form upside-down images on the other wall. Eventually someone built a device in A.D. 1500 that would do it intentionally--the camera obscura.

Early models were large, but by the 18th Century more easily portable models became available. These cameras were later adapted to create the first photographs
