The present configuration of the Vatican city with enclosed feed-ramp or collonades outside of St. Peter"s square dates to about the time (oddly) of Luther and the reformation. Luther, a German monk and ordained priest- questioned how church funds were obtained for this massive construction project- on a par with the Pentagon.

St. Peter one of Jesus' disciples. He was the first pope.

Roman Catholic AnswerThe Church was considered to have been born from the side of Christ when the soldier opened his side with a lance and blood and water flowed out. It was formally started at Pentecost, fifty days later, when the Holy Spirit descended on the apostles to confirm them in all truth and lead them to preach to and baptize all nations. Thus is was "built" by Jesus Christ, through the Holy Spirit, on St. Peter.
