When Abraham Lincoln served in the US House of Representatives for the US State of Illinois, he was a member of the Whig Party. Later this party dissolved, and Lincoln joined the new Republican Party. He ran as a Republican in the 1858 Illinois Senate race and in 1860 in his quest for the US Presidency.

He then served 4 consecutive terms (2 years, each) in the Illinois General Assembly. He then ran for a seat from Illinois for the House of Representatives, in 1846. He served in the House of Representatives for one term, 2 years, 1847-1849, and was not successful when he ran for reelection in 1849.
