By not returning to what he thinks is his hometown of Corinth subsequent Theban King Oedipus tries to defy fate. He learns from the Delphic Oracle that he's fated to kill his father and marry his mother. He thinks that Corinthian King Polybus and Queen Merope are his parents. So he decides not to get as far away as he can from his home and his fate.

But his defiance isn't successful. He heads from Delphi to Thebes. On the way, he kills a stranger who's old enough to be his father, and whom he resembles, in a street brawl over a crossroads right of way. Once in Thebes, he marries Theban Queen Jocasta, whose first husband never returns from a trip to Delphi, and who's old enough to be Oedipus' mother.

The irony lies in the fact that the stranger whom Oedipus kills is his real father. The grieving royal widow whom he marries is the wife of murdered Theban King Laius, and therefore Oedipus' mother. So it would have been far safer and happier for Oedipus to have gone back to Corinth and the foster parents that he never was fated to kill or to marry.

He ran away from home to prevent him from killing his father and marrying his mother. But it turned out that those weren't Oedipus' biological parents. He actually did kill his father and marry his mother.

Oedipus isn't responsible for his own downfall because his fate, like everyone else was predetermined. Everything that happened to Oedipus was controlled by prophecy. It was destined to happen.

Being killed, disappearing as part of a meal, missing out on proper funerary procedures, and perishing without establishing a family or learning his heritage are what would have happened to Oedipus if he had not solved the Sphinx's riddle in the play Oedipus Rex ("Oedipus the King"). The Sphinx threatened death and devourment to all who attempted to enter or leave Thebes without solving the riddle of four morning legs, two afternoon legs, and three evening legs.

Confront his presumed parents and refrain from killing or marrying his seniors are things that Oedipus can do to stop the chain of events in "Oedipus Rex" by Sophocles (495 B.C.E. - 405 B.C.E.).

Specifically, Oedipus hears that his presumed parents are not his parents and then that he is fated to kill his father and marry his mother. He decides to escape his life, kill an older version of himself and marry a woman old enough to be his mother. Instead, he needs to confront his presumed parents and perhaps also get clearer answers from the Delphic oracle.

Yes and no, Oedipus is responsible for his actions in "Oedipus Rex" by Sophocles (495 B.C.E. - 405 B.C.E.)

Specifically, Theban King Oedipus does not have intent and motive in regard to committing the crime of murder and engaging in the immoral behavior of incest. He does not know that his murder victim is his father. He likewise does not know that his wife is his mother. The only crime for which he therefore may be responsible is the killing in self-defense.

Oedipus could not have avoided his fate since the Fates predicted it and Fates see the future and it cannot be changed.

Why does Oedipus pity his daughters in 'Oedipus Rex'?

That no one will want to marry them, that they will not have children, and that they will be insulted, isolated, shunned and unprotected number among the reasons why Oedipus pities his daughters in "Oedipus Rex" by Sophocles (495 B.C.E. - 405 B.C.E.).Specifically, Theban Princesses Antigone and Ismene are minors and unable to fend for themselves. They will have a hard time since it is public knowledge that their father is also their half-brother, that he is their grandfather's killer and that their mother also is their grandmother. Having incestuous parents and a murderous father opens few doors and leads to life on the streets unless their uncle Creon as sole ruler of Thebes takes them under his wing and finds husbands for them.

What is the dramatic purpose of the first part of the play King Oedipus Please help ASAP?

The setting of the Oedipus the King as in the case of most Greek tragedies, does not require a change of scene. Throughout the play the skene with at least one door represents the facade of the royal palace of Thebes. Even when action takes place inside the palace, such as Jocasta's suicide and Oedipus's self-blinding, there is no shift of scene. The Priest refers to Oedipus's saving of Thebes from the Sphinx, a monster with human female head and breasts and a lion's body with wings. The "tax" which the Thebans paid the Sphinx was in the form of young men killed by the monster when they were unable to answer the riddle:"What has one voice and four feet, two feet and three feet?" The answer which only Oedipus was able to provide was "man" (crawling on all fours as a baby, walking unaided on two feet throughout most of his life and finally walking with the aid of a cane in old age). Dramatic irony is a much-used literary device in this play.

How does Sophocles play Oedipus the King relate to Plato's Myth of the Cave?

Sophocles' Oedipus Rex and Plato's Allegory of the Cave are similar in that they both have reoccurring themes of blindness and sight. In Oedipus, the prophet Teiresias is literally blind, but is figuratively able to see better than Oedipus because he knows about the prophecy behind the king's past. (the prophecy being that Oedipus married his mother and killed his father.) Although Teiresias makes several attempts to convince Oedipus of his true lineage, the pompous king refuses to accept this truth and accuses him of lying. Eventually, Oedipus realizes this and his wife Jocasta is unable to bear the truth that was suddenly revealed. Her inability to cope with such a traumatic event causes her to commit suicide. Once Oedipus realizes what he has done, he blinds himself so he would not be able to see the results of his unholy deeds, and is ashamed to see his children, as well as the hardships and pain he had put his family through. On the other hand, Plato's literary work discusses and fully embraces the quote "ignorance is bliss" while introducing the theme of blindness as a prisoner faces a wall in a cave that only portrays shadows from a fire of what is happening in the outside world. Sight comes in as the prisoner is suddenly released and let out into the world. (Darkness represented lies and falsity/ Light symbolized the truth, reality, and enlightenment) The prisoner is disoriented and hurt at first because he was drastically forced out of the darkness of the cave and into the sunlight. He then was able to see actual detailed images of the shadows that he was previously confined to viewing, but when he decided to try and explain this newfound discovery to other prisoners who were chained in the cave, they denied it. Despite his efforts to attempt to share the truths of reality with others who had been deprived of this experience, they doubted him because they refused to believe that all they had seen was a lie. This shows that the truth is sometimes difficult to accept.Teiresias, the blind prophet parallels the prisoner's character in that they were both enlightened by the truth, but then were doubted while trying to divulge the truth to others who were proven to be unknowledgeable. This may have resulted because people sometimes choose what they want to believe and have a hard time accepting that all that they had ever known was truly a lie. Another aspect of Oedipus Rex that relates to The Allegory of the Cave was when the truth of Oedipus marrying his mother was uncovered. Both Jocasta and Oedipus are unable to bear this sudden revelation and are startled and caught off guard. (similar to the way the prisoner was when he was thrust out into the light of reality.)

Why is Creon unable to stop the tragedy?

Not being able to stop the death of Antigone is the reason why Theban King Creon is unable to stop the tragedy in the play. He understands that he and his family are doomed if he doesn't reverse his previous actions. He's able to get the dead body of his nephew Polyneices buried. But he doesn't get to the cave in time to stop his niece Antigone's suicide. Her suicide inspires the successive suicides of Creon's son Haimon and Creon's wife Theban Queen Eurydice.
