Check the coolant system to make sure you are not low. An air bubble going through the heater core can make an odd sound.
A bad valve can cause this sort of sound.
Overheating. Have the cooling system checked.

A "gurgling" sound on the right side of the navel is due to digestion and is completely normal.
A defective vacuum line can cause a whistling sound when the vehicle is accelerating. A loose belt can also create a high pitched whistle sound.

It is not smoke. It is steam. Moisture is making the gurgling sound and moisture coming in contact with a warmer surface (the coil) is evaporating making steam.
Most likely it's a CV joint.
