President Ulysses S. Grant was a great military leader, and an honest President of the United States. However, Grant's presidency was clouded by disgrace and dishonesty. Grant was slow to realize that some persons who pretended to be his friends could not be trusted. Several of his major appointees became involved in scandals. But Grant was so honest that few historians believe he could have been involved personally.
Grant's Administration worked to bring the North and South closer together. It helped to persuade Congress to pardon many Confederate leaders and tried to limit the use of federal troops in the South.
Grant also tried to maintain the rights of Southern Blacks. He used federal troops to protect Blacks from the Ku Klux Klan and other White groups that organized in the South to keep Blacks from voting. In 1870 and 1871, Congress passed three force bills to enforce the voting rights of Blacks.
During Grant's second Administration, there was the Panic of 1873. In September of 1873, several important Eastern banks failed, and a financial panic swept the country. Hardest hit by the panic were bankers, manufacturers, and farmers in the South and West. From this a new political party was organized, and was called the Greenback Party. This party and other groups demanded an inflation of the nation's currency to ease the depression.
Under such pressure, Congress passed an inflation bill, that would have added $18 million to the paper currency in circulation. But, Grant vetoed the bill.
One accomplishment of Ulysses S. Grant while in office was his signing of the Civil Rights Act of 1870. He also fought against the Ku Klux Klan, and created an Indian peace policy. Grant served as the country's 18th President.
Ulysses S. Grant's greatest accomplishments as president was to protect civil rights for African-Americans and fight Ku Klux Klan violence. He also used his influence to pass the 15th Amendment giving protection for African-American voting rights.
Grant's Presidency was loaded with corruption and scandals, but his penchant for nepotism was most notable. Over 40 of his relatives benefitted financially from his Presidency.
