The umbilical cord attaches the infant to the placenta. If left alone, it would normally wither and fall off eventually anyway; clamping it and cutting it off is just a more hygenic and safer way of dealing with it.

The cord will shrivel up and go black, then it will drop off around about 5 days after birth. It can smell really bad but this is normal, it just should be kept dry and clean.
