President Obama had to spent much of 2012 running for re-election. He had to contend with not just Mitt Romney, but with a number of Republican groups which spent millions of dollars in attack ads against him on TV and radio and in print. In an effort to defend his record and refute what he believed were distortions about his first term, he did a large number of speaking engagements and rallies in the Swing States; appeared on numerous TV and radio shows; participated in three televised debates; and continued to make the case for why he believed he deserved a second term. In the midst of the campaign, he celebrated his 20th wedding anniversary, and his 51st birthday. On November 6, 2012, after a very close and at times contentious race, he defeated his challenger Mitt Romney, winning a majority of both the popular and the electoral votes.
