The 1950s and 1960s were years of prosperity in the United States. A post-World War II economy allowed a lot of people to kick back and enjoy life with the comfort of living. Think of the "Roaring Twenties" (1920s, Great Gatsby, etc.) except without the Stock Market crash/Great Depression, and even better living. There wasn't much going on in the 50s and 60s besides the pressure of the Civil Rights Movement in 1964. You might have felt safe by the police force or your own subtle home protection.
