William Sidney Porter, also known as O. Henry, held a number of employments before fleeing the country to Honduras, returning to the United States because of his wife's sickness and death, and being convicted for embezzlement occurring during his time working for the First National Bank of Austin, in Austin, Texas. Some of these jobs included pharmacist, journalist, draftsman, and bank teller. It is not known if he actually spent time in the cell block of the Ohio Penitentiary, but because he was a licensed pharmacist he worked in the prison hospital as the night druggist.

O. Henry's first job was working in his uncle's drugstore when he was a teenager. He worked as a pharmacist's assistant, which influenced his later writing with themes of medicine and drugstore culture.
