The national government is weak
The south had the better military force and leader's. What changed the tide of the war was the change brought forth by President Abraham Lincoln in making it about Slavery ins…tead of the industrial revolution which was the leading cause of the South's wanting to cede from the Union. The North started gaining momentum with the printing of 'Green backs' (Lincoln's money), and the South losing the financial backing of the British. That and the South rushing ahead of its supply lines giving the North the chance to cut them off and fight them without giving them the chance to replenish supplies and troops. This came to a head in Gettysburg PA. Were Union General George Meade defeated Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia after a bloody 3 day battle. This battle starting on July 1st and ending on July 3rd 1863. The Civil War raged on with victories for both the South and the North for almost two more years. It wasn't until finally on April 9th 1865 that General Lee finally surrendered to General Grant in the Appomattox Court House in Virginia. Sadly while Celebration broke out in Washington D.C., on April 10th 1865, President Lincoln was shot and later died.
The North was more industrialized than the South.
What were the strengths and weaknesses of the Union and the Confederacy for the beginning of the Civil War?
The Northern States had a solid manufacturing infrastructure. The Southern states had a more consolidated base with internal lines of communication. The Union was able to su…rround the Southern states and cut off their ability to get suppliers that they were unable to make..
1. They only had to defend their home turf, not invade new territory. 2. Strong military tradition resulted in many skilled officers. 3. Only had to hold out until the Union… wore out; they wern't trying to conquer anything.. Hope this helps! ;)
The union won
At the beginning of the Civil War, if neither side did anything, the South would win. The North had to attack to win. Geography favored the South as far as moving men was conc…erned. The Appalachian Mountains provided a barrier to moving troops for the North. Behind the Appalachian Mountains, the Tennessee River and the Rivers of the South came quite close. Railroads made connections easy. Only Florida was out of the transportation loop. Still, Florida had many semi wild cattle that would be useful in feeding an army. The South had a plethora of natural resources and could create a number of industries. It did.The South's weakness was that it had to ship in much of its' war material. While it made some materiel, it bought most of its guns and ammunition from England. Once the North had blockaded its ports, it had difficulty provisioning its troops. The South seldom had adequate troops for the task and frequently had a divided command. After The First Battle of Bull Run, Stonewall Jackson said, "If I had 15,000 fresh troops, I could conquer Washington." He did not have the fresh troops. At the Battle of Vicksburg, Both General Pemberton and General Joseph. E. Johnson reported directly to President Jefferson Davis. Not having a proper chain of command caused the loss of the battle. On the other hand, The North had more men. The North had a powerful industrial base. Still, it would take time for the industries to change from making civilian products to manufacturing military products. The North had more railroads. They were all different sizes but the North had the ability to standardize them. (It is too bad that it chose such a narrow size for "standard gage.") Thus, the North would spend over a year in a holding pattern while the nation geared up for war. Only after the North had switched its industrial base to a wartime footing and created more modern artillery, could it begin to gain an advantage. Thus, the North's big disadvantage was that it had to act, and it took it a long time to get ready. Its great advantage came after it got ready and had better artillery and breech loading rifles.
Its ports were blockaded, so they couldn't import the goods they needed, having no manufacturing industry.
the weakness the british had was the british had red coats which made them easy targets but the patriots had like the old muskets and barely any food and not much supplies and… the british had some people in their country that hated the tax. the strengh the Americans had was they had help from the french the britishes advantage was that they had the kings support and better weapons and more shelter hope it helped! ^^edited: you're thinking of the Revolutionary war. The Civil war was between the American confederacy and the union. They were two different wars...
They had no common stengths. Their strengths were more-or-less the opposite of each other. The South had a much smaller population, but a much more emotive war-mission. The …North was stronger in artillery, and the South was stronger in cavalry. The North had a highly talented President, the South had a useless one. etc.
By far the Confederacy. They won the first battles of Bull Run and routed the Union Army. The Union just through an army of poor trained soldiers at the well trained Southerne…rs.
Some weaknesses of the confederacy in the Civil War were less people and less area to stay in, meaning the Union could capture it easier.
Well, there were many diffrent Generals during the Civil War. But, if you mean the Leaders Lincoln for Union and Lee for Confederacy. If im not right feel free to correct me!
The Southerners were a more soldierlike breed, raring for a fight, led by some of the best officers of the US Army who had resigned to join the Confederates. They were mostly… fighting on home ground, unfamiliar to the enemy. They had a more emotive mission - to defend the homeland against the invader.
In theory, the Union, because it already had the administrative structure in place, whereas the Confederates were having to build a government and an army from scratch. But i…n practice, the two sides were equally unprepared for a long war, the Union able to muster only 16,000 National Guard, and nothing in the way of weapons or uniforms.
The Union: *Larger population *Better resources The Confederacy: *excellent military leaders *a strong fighting spirit *The Confederacy also knew the land and ha…d the will to defend it because most of the war was fought in the South*
