Officer class - the army was a more natural choice of career for sons of rural landowners than in the industrial North.

Home-ground advantage - most battles were on terrain unfamiliar to the enemy

Stronger war-mission - to defend the homeland against the invader.

Their President did not have to face an election in mid-war, as Lincoln did.

The Confederate army's strengths lay largely for the cause they fought for. They wanted to be independent from the US. They knew if they failed to achieve this goal, the South would be ruined because of the war. Also, a good number of fine generals were West Point graduates. So were the generals in the North, but once again, if the North decided to no longer fight in the war, the loss to the US would be made up for by the vast western frontiers. Also, the South had a strong military heritage and had more military colleges then did the North.

The Confederate strengths were their numbers and their ability to shoot. However, their weakness was that they were cocky and underestimated the power of the north. The Union had canon factories all through the northern region of Boston. When the Confederates were bombarded with canon fire, it was technological advancements against high-end shooters that truly won the war.
