James Madison was the fourth US President. He served from 1809 to 1817. Madison was a Virginian and his political party affiliation is listed as Democrat-Republican. He was a graduate of the College of New Jersey, which is now Princeton University.

Madison was deeply involved in foreign affairs, and was in office when the US declared war on the British empire, for their part in kidnapping Americans on the high seas. This was the War of 1812. Also, the actions of the British, its blockade of French ports, caused a conflict as American cargo ships were blocked from trading with France. Madison was President when the British burned down the White House. The conflict between Britain and America ended with the Treaty of Ghent.
