The French Colonial Empire was consisted mostly of fur-trappers, hunters, and traders who assimilated more with the indigenous people than other settlers. As a result, French colonies had relatively few towns and villages compared to England, with the majority of French settlers being nomadic fur traders known as coureurs des bois.

Unlike New France, which existed mainly as a profit-feeding source for the French homeland, the British were playing for keeps. England never intended for their New World colonial possessions to be temporary get-rich-quick schemes; rather, the British worked to establish a permanent presence in the New World. As a result, the population of British colonies were significantly greater than French colonies and had a greater population density. Towns and villages were more common, and even sometimes grew into full-fledged cities.
