There were a number of hardships that long lasting unemployment brought during the Great Depression. The cost of living was very high and most people could not afford the basic needs of life like food, clothing and shelter.
There were many hardships during the Great Depression. As banks failed, people lost money they had in savings and checking accounts. Many people lost all their money and some were able to get some of their money out of the bank before it closed. Unemployment soared. Most families during this time only had one breadwinner--the Father/Husband. Most women did not work so if the man lost his job, the family was without money coming in. As people lost jobs, they stopped spending and businesses lost money as a result. Factories closed because there was little demand for their product. Unemployment increased. Farmers were hit hard. The price for their crops fell and many lost their farm. The Dust Bowl in the midsection of the nation added to the farmer's misery and many became migrant workers who traveled to California looking for farm work. They became a permanent class of out-of-work farmers. Education plans were often canceled as the cost of tuition was beyond the reach of many. Children still went to school but many dropped out to see if they could find work to help the families. Fathers left home and "rode the rails" looking for work. They felt if they left home, and sent back what little money they could, the family would be better off without them staying at home with no income. People could not spend money on entertainment. Movies were very popular during the 30s but a lot of people could not afford the cost to see a movie. Sporting events that charged admission also suffered. People who had invested heavily in the Stock Market saw their investments disappear or go way down in value. Many Americans never recovered from the shock of bank failures and stock failures and they refused to trust such financial institutions again. People who got sick could not afford medical treatment in some cases. Many became so depressed that they suffered mental problems, some even committing suicide. Many children took smal jobs to help support their family. may fathers left the families leaving them with nothing because they were ashamed. sad :(
There was no jobs, buisnesses went out, and people hated their lives because they sucked.
