The main goal of the union was to preserve the Union, until the Emancipation Proclamation changed the reason of the war to slavery. The Confederacy just wanted their independence away from the Union and to form their own country.

The Union's side of strategy was the anaconda plan. The plan was to blockade the Southern ports and not let them receive or ship any goods. This will weaken them and then they will invade the South.

The Confederates plan for winning the war was to protect the southern lands from the Union and make the war last so long the Union would get tired of fighting.

But in the end The Union won the War

The goal of President Lincoln in the US Civil War was to end the Southern rebellion. Lincoln knew that only a Constitutional amendment could legally abolish slavery. The 13th Amendment of December 1865 accomplished this, although for all practical purposes, the defeat of the South freed the slaves. The Confederate States of America wanted to create a new nation and keep its social values such as slavery. On a long term basis of course, slavery would be abolished in the Confederacy at some point in the future.
