It was one of the greatest human tragedies in the last 40 years since the end of the war. Families were separated from each other and East Germans who had worked in West Berlin, could no longer work there and had to find employment in the east which was very difficult. The Communists were discredited by most of the people-east and west. Berliners, who had endured so much suffering during the war, with the constant air raids and intense fighting and atrocities committed, did not deserve this inhumane treatment. Many elderly Berliners actually committed suicide as the wall became a common sight over time. Many gave up hope of ever seeing their loved ones and put an end to their lives. West Berlin flourished under Willy Brandt, the major, and subsequent leaders in the 1960's, 70's, and 80's. Even though East Berlin was heralded as the "Paris of the East" by the Communists, it was much drearier than the prosperous West Berlin. I have been to both sides of the Wall in the 1970's and 80's-the difference was unbelievable!!!

The Berlin Wall was torn down due to political changes in Europe; Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev lost his control by 1990, and the Soviet Union fell apart. Many people were affected by the tearing down of the Berlin Wall. The East Germans could now be free to travel west and be free. Most people were glad that the unjust acts of the Soviets was finally over. Mrs. Loiselle's first reaction was "It's about time" and "We won the Cold War", she had mixed emotions when she first found out.

Well the wall was a big problem for Berlin, on the east side of the Wall the people were completely ruled by the evils of communism. When people began fleeing from the East (communist) side, the Soviets decided they wouldn't let people pass through the barriers.
