The causes of the Crimean War were both religious and political. Politically Russia was after territory that was held by the Ottoman Empire. Religiously it was over who should hold control of religious artifacts. The effect of the Crimean War were the creation of modern nursing, the establishment of war correspondents, and the proof that Russia could be defeated despite its size.

IMPROVEMENT.

Russia's ultimate strategic objective was that gain the control of the Dardanelles and establish a foothold in the Mediterranean, what was unacceptable to both Great Britain and France.

Realizing that the Russians were succeding in having the upper hand over the Turkish's navy and army, the mentioned European powers signed a treaty of alliance with Turkey and declared war on Russian Empire.

That led to the landing of a British and a French army in Crimea and the investment of the Fortress of Sevastopol, after which the war was so called, though the warfare was not limited to the Black Sea, involving also the Baltic Sea and the Turkish regions in the Balcans and Caucasus.

The war lasted from October 1853 to February 1856 and ended with the defeat of the Russian Empire, whose goals of expansion and strategic rule over the Dardanelles at the Turkish's Empire expenses had been frustrated.
