Jesus' methods of teaching did not only include saying things straightforward. You see, if He was to teach in the straightforward manner, no one would of understood it as most of them were taught otherwise compared to His teachings. The teachings would have been lost as no one understood it and the name "Christ" would most likely be lost. To prevent that, instead of teaching at a level far beyond the people's understanding at that current time, we went down to their level by combining His teachings with simple stories. The stories are basically either a group of metaphors or one big extended metaphor. The stories are called ''parables,'' or "earthly stories with heavenly meanings." A quick example of a parable is one about the talents. In that time, talents were these coins that they used as a currency. I don't remember the story word-for-word, but here's a quick summary. There was this person that gave these three people talents. One person he gave a certain amount of talents, the next he gave more, but the last he only gave one. The two people that had more talents went out and used there money to make more money. The person that had one talent buried it for safekeeping. The time came that they had to give the talents back. The person that had the most talents doubled his amount of talents. The one that had middle amount of talents tripled his amount. The one that had one brought back one... and only one. The person who gave him the talent (I think he was a farmer?) was angry with him, as he didn't use his talents for anything useful and instead was selfish and afraid of losing the one coin. The guy then lost his coin because the farmer took it away and gave it to one of the other two, leaving the one guy with nothing. The moral of the story is that you can't just go through life afraid of everything. You either take the risk and at least have a chance on not losing everything or don't take the risk and make it a definite on losing everything. Not saying that you go out there and take all risks you can see, just saying that you can't be afraid of every little thing. And I'm guessing that the talents translation was no coincidence. If you have a talent, don't waste it doing nothing. Use your talent. That was just one example of a parable, there are many more. Sorry, but I can't list all of them. If you want to find them, there in The Bible, New Testament.

Why did Jesus pick Simon and Andrew as His first disciples?

In John 17:6-19 is Jesus' prayer for His disciples. In it He thanks God the Father for giving the disciples to Him to teach and prepare them to carry on the work that the Father wanted done, to make disciples of all nations, baptizing them and teaching them to observe all the things that He (Jesus) commanded. Jesus did what the Father commanded and that included choosing not only James, Peter and John but the other disciples as well.
