Alaska was purchased from Russia in 1867, but this was mainly the work of Secretary of State Seward, who was appointed by Lincoln, not Johnson. Johnson's record was mostly negative, getting into bitter quarrels with Congress over Reconstruction policy, and losing on virtually every disputed point.
