Water has its highest density at 4 degress centigrade (give or take a few hundredths). So, one gallon of water at that temperature is going to have a greater mass than frozen water, which has a lower density than liquid water. That's why ice floats on water, it's got a lower density(density is mass divided by volume).

a gallon of water. by 9.05 percent.

Haha! Trick question... err, isn't it?

Ice is about 0.9 times the density of water so a block ofice occupying the same volume as a gallon water willbe lighter than the gallonof water.

However if you freeze the gallon of water to a solid block its volume will be greater than it was as water!

For the same substance, they both weigh the same since they are comprised of the same components. Only the density will be different (eg. ice floats on water). Changing the state of a substance does not change its mass as you are not changing the composition of the substance.

At 20 oC or 293 K or 68 oF, the densities of water and raw milk are 0.998 and 1.03 g/cm3 respectively. As the density of raw milk is slightly more than that of water, 1 gallon of milk will weigh slightly more than 1 gallon of water. However, for practical purposes, it can be considered that, both will weigh the same (as the densities are almost the same).

the water weighs more, ice is an 'expanded form of water- because it is less dense there is more space between the molecules and therefore lighter

No. Freezing a liquid simply slows the rate at which the molecules travel, it does not add or subtract anything at a molecular level. So a liquid weighs the same as before when it is frozen.

Frozen water weighs the same as liquid water. Frozen is water is less dense and will float on liquid water, but the weight remains the same.

Take a sample of liquid water and freeze it ... its weight won't change.

But take 1 quart of liquid water and 1 quart of ice ... the quart of liquid water is heavier.

How could you tell if a liquid has a higher or lower density than water?

If a liquid does not mix with water and you pour a little water on the liquid, then if the water sinks, the water has a higher density than the liquid; otherwise, the liquid has a higher density. If a drop of the water dissolves in the liquid, then you weigh an equal volume of both liquids. The heavier one has the higher density.

Could water float?

Technically if there's a liquid that's heavier than water and is clear, it could give water the appearance of floating.

Why oil cannot be mixed with water?

because oil is a heavier liquid and water is a lighter liquid. you can see this by pouring some water and oil in a glass cup and wait until it settles. you can see that oil will be on the bottom and water will be on top.

Is a liquid heavy or light?

Well it can be either light of heavy depending on the amount of liquid and the density of liquid. 1 Litre of water - 1 Kilogram Oil is heavier than water; it sinks to the bottom For more information on liquid density and liquid weight search Google

What is hevier ice or water?

If you freeze a sample of liquid water it should expand but still weigh the same amount. Water is denser than ice so by volume liquid water is heavier than water ice, thus ice floats.

Do liquids have different masses?

Yes it depends on their molecular structures. Mercury is a liquid, but it is much heavier than water.
