A common mistake in looking for a mammal is to say 'all mammals have fur' but this is not true- whales and dolphins are both mammals because they feed their young on milk and breathe air, but do not have fur of any type.

The best way to look for a mammal is to check they don't have scales or feathers (Birds or reptiles or Fish) Other ways of checking takes time like seeing whether they birth live babies.

Of course though, telling what catergory an animal comes under comes with practice, and should eventually be an easy practice.

People have "baby teeth" or "milk teeth". So do all of the other mammals! The only exceptions are mammals like anteaters -- they don't have any teeth at all.

Mammal mothers are hard workers. Baby mammals learn from their mothers. Most of the mothers don't really try to teach their babies, but the babies watch their mother and do the things they see her do. Through copying their mothers, baby mammals learn everything they need to survive.

So, what do mammals eat when they grow up? They eat all sorts of different things! Lions are mammals who eat meat - they are called carnivores. Cows are mammals who eat plants - they are called herbivores. People are mammals who eat meat and plants - they are called omnivores.

Mammals may be distinguished in many ways. First, they can be distinguished by the number of limbs they have. Then they can be distinguished by the form of transportation they use. Mammals must be air breathing and warm-blooded. Most mammals also have sweat glands. These are just a few of the ways mammals are distinguished from other animals.

Why do some young animals resemble their parents?

No. Although mammals do not go through a complete metamorphosis, as amphibians do, many mammals do not look like their parents at birth. A marsupial at birth is a tiny embryo, not at all like an adult marsupial. Many mammals are born blind and hairless. Probably, the mammals that most resemble their parents at birth are the hoofed mammals.
